PHOTOGRAPHER NORMAN SEEFF WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS SESSION with the late Whitney Houston in 1990, at the height of her career. “I viewed her as a towering master of emotional expression, someone whose voice was transcendent,” he says. “I was thrilled about the opportunity.” Seeff rented a large studio for the shoot, replete with clothing and makeup specialists. “We had a substantial team, and she brought her own people,” he says. “She walked in drop-dead gorgeous—tall, slim and clear-eyed.” But it was Houston’s own gracious nature that left a lasting impression on the photographer. “She was one of the most appreciative people I’ve ever worked with,” he says. “Whitney was completely enthusiastic about everything I asked her to do. She was very interactive and vulnerable and open.” This outtake captures Houston in an unguarded moment, receiving a touch-up from her stylist. “You can see her lovely innocence, the clear-eyed person she was,” Seeff says. “I especially like this shot because it represents the feel of who she really was at the time: a lovely, communicative young woman who seemed delighted with her life and stress-free. We had a lovely time.”

FAB 4 X 50, DAY 3: Fifty years ago today it was back to the grind, as the Beatles settled in for a weeklong residency at the Cavern Club in their hometown of Liverpool. John, Paul, George and Pete played two shows a day (lunchtime and evening) on 6/12, 6/13, 6/15, 6/19 and 6/20, and one evening show on 6/16 (Saturday).

Paul: “The Cavern was sweaty, damp, dark, loud and exciting.”

Robyn Hitchcock: “‘There Goes The Ice’ was written in October 2008 off the coast of Greenland on board the Grigor Mikheev, the Russian ship chartered by Cape Farewell to take a collection of artists and scientists up to Disko Bay where we visited a region of the imperilled Arctic. The photographer, Chris Wainwright, had just filmed me spelling out Here Comes The Sun in semaphore, silhouetted on deck against the sunset. Surrounded as we were by icebergs ‘calved’ from the rapidly melting Arctic ice-cap, I found myself writing There Goes The Ice as a mournful echo of George Harrison’s song. I took the song fresh to KT Tunstall and her husband Luke Bullen in the cabin next door, KT obligingly sang harmony and Luke recorded us. Back in England the following June, Luke recorded KT and I performing this version, in their tent. KT also plays guitar on this version and appears here courtesy of EMI/Virgin records.”
